The Upper Perk Prayer Evangelism Network began in 2003 when three area churches began to meet together monthly to pray for the Valley. The three churches were Perkiomenville Mennonite Church (Pastor Charles Ness), Community Bible Fellowship Church (Pastor Michael Tannous), and Hope Valley Community Church (Pastor Peter Smith).
Their common purpose for gathering together was a passion for intercessory prayer and evangelism. Their prayers centered around asking God to bring revival to all the churches in the Valley and for God to bring spiritual awakening to those without Jesus Christ. Their burden to reach the Valley grew through materials including "Prayer Evangelism" by Ed Silvoso and "Transformation" videos by Harvest Evangelism.
The UPPEN group grew to six churches in 2005 and to ten churches in 2006. Currently, UPPEN has launched a 3 year prayer evangelism strategy known as Prayer and Care and Share. The strategy includes:
Mobilizing as many prayer intercessors as possible (2006-2007) in preparation for the first year.
- Prayer - 2007-2008 -- Praying over neighborhoods and every family in the Valley for one whole year in the first year. (encouraging each church to establish Lighthouses of Prayer through all participating churches, UPPEN worship and prayer combined services, National Day of Prayer worship service, Regional 40 Day of Prayer and Fasting (40 churches participated from the surrounding region) ).
- Care - 2008-2009 -- Reaching out to the community through acts of kindness, love and compassion, in the second year. (Eg. the Seven Project at the High School, Freedom Fest, Prayer Walk with the WordFM, laying the groundwork for the Shepherd's Call,...)
- Share - 2009-2010 -- Seeking to share the gospel with every family in the Valley in the third year. Praying for God to open doors for the gospel in the community. Each church seeking creative ways to share the gospel. Praying for one on one "divine appointments". Ministering to peoples needs in the community; servant evangelism. UPPEN sponsoring a community-wide evangelistic outreach sometime in 2010.
(Events in 2010 planned include "The Bible in 90 Days" bible reading challenge (Jan. to March of 2010) for the whole community. A number of churches are participating in doing the reading program at the same time; a 2nd Regional 40 Day of Prayer and Fasting, Feb. 17 to April 4; a series of Women's Conferences: "The Revealer of the Enemy" with speaker Jack Serra from Harvest Evangelism, starting Sat. March. 13th, 9am to 3pm at Perkiomenville Mennonite Church; a regional worship and prayer gathering to prepare us for the 40 Day Fast at Perkiomenville Mennonite Church Jan. 31st 6:30 to 8:30pm; a community-wide evangelistic event in 2010.
